– Gabriela Jurkovic
On this year's Thank You Art Day, Videotage is pleased to welcome Gabriela Jurkovic (Prague) to Hong Kong as the second FUSE:: Resident in 2010. Gabriela has spent more than a month in HK and is excited to bring the local art community two works from herself. Besides showing a video Be My Guest and a real-time installation The Bed, Gabriela will also share the projects she has done in Prague as an artist and as a curator.
On the same evening, Nana Seo and Hilda Chan from the team of Videotage will make a presentation on their recent trip to Berlin. They will talk about their experience at Transmediale.10, the new media art festival and the museums, art spaces and art works they've seen including Cloud Core Scanner, a cloud-generating machine exhibited at Schering Stiftung. On top of all these, Nana Seo will have a live chat with Christoph Fahle, Co-Founder of Betahaus (www.betahaus.de), a collaborative working space in Berlin, to share his knowledge on creative industry development in Berlin and more stories with Hong Kong.
Gabriela is a young artist and curator based in Prague, Czech Republic. Her current residency at Videotage is a video and new media art exchange between Central Europe and Hong Kong. While introducing the new media art scene in Central Europe to local audience, she is also researching on video and new media art in Hong Kong. At the end of the 5-month residency, Gabriela will produce an exhibition at Videotage presenting new media artists from Central Europe, while the research material about HK media art she compiles will be presented in Prague later on.
About the work >>
The Bed
Maxime Vicaire, 2010
The bed, where we sleep touches the substantiality essence of every human being, which represents health, sexuality, desires and purity; It is also a refuge and the centerpiece of human being; It is a safe place on earth, a place of origin and a place of decay.
“The Bed” is an installation, which is a direct transferal and a link between Prague and Hong Kong to create a spatiotemporal paradox. It runs in real time across a distance of 8000 km, which is a projection between the past and future, yesterday & tomorrow. The time difference between the 2 cities is 8 hours. In Prague, the per - former will be lying on his bed, while the image will be live-projected on a bed at Videotage.
The piece is trying to communicate and satisfy one’s hidden desires and needs.
“Despite the long distance, let’s spend the night together on the same bed without your physical presence, which can be achieved with the help of chroma-key projection, encoded in real time. The installation is to fulfill my desire, a gentle miracle that travels the distance of 8000 km, and Max will be here with me, at home, calm in bed.”
Be My Guest
Gabriela Jurkovic, 2010
'The film was made in 2010, inside my hostel room in Hong Kong, during the first day of Chinese New Year and Valentine's Day. This 1-minute long piece was shot in a tight area, no bigger than 7 square meters. The title of the film, “be my guest” is also the real password to access the wifi Internet in the room. The film, as well as the whole installation is based on my personal experience, the continuous balance between the fine border of the nuances when in the situation of being both a "distinguished guest“ and a “foreign visitor.”'

What's 39 ART Day (Thank You Art day)?
Originally 39 Art Day was initiated by a Japanese artist Yoshiaki Kaihatsu in 2000 to foster the appreciation of contemporary art in Japan. In Japanese, "thank you" rhymes with 3/9 (san-kyuu), as there is no "th" sound and the Japanese people tend to pronounce "th" as "s." Thus, the Date for 39 Art Day on March 9 and now it is celebrated worldwide! See www.39art.com for more details.
This year is the 10th Anniversary of Thank You Art Day which takes place on Tuesday 9th March, 2010. ‘39 Art Day’ (Thank You Art Day) is a special day to appreciate, promote, and otherwise positively engage ourselves in contemporary art worldwide.
