Videotage will present Thing, the artwork by Joseph Chen King-yuen in Pubic Art Exhibition of the Opening Ceremony of the Cattle Depot Art Park, co-organized by Kowloon City District Office and Kowloon City District Council. The Opening Ceremony of the Cattle Depot Art Park will be held on 8th September 2019 and and the video of Thing will be sceened in the Opening Ceremony and the Outdoor Screening on 20th September 2019.

錄映太奇將於九龍城區議會及九龍城民政事務處舉辦的「牛棚藝術公園開幕典禮—牛棚體驗之旅」的公共藝術展覽中呈獻藝術家陳敬元的作品－《物》。牛棚藝術公園開幕典禮將於2019年9月8日舉辦，《物》的錄映放映將於開幕典禮及2019年9月20日的戶外放映中放映。

““Thing (物)” means “all things (萬物)”. “Buffalo (牛)” is a great thing; the pattern of the universe starts from leading buffalos to plough. “Thing”’s radical is “buffalo”, and its phonetic is “wù(勿)”.” Xu Shen. Shuowen Jiezi. (說文解字; literally: ‘Explaining Graphs and Analyzing Characters’)

By tracing the sacred roles of bovine in mythology and religion and exploring diverse uses of bovine in the secular society, Thing studies the relationship between bovine and human culture. Through reconnecting Cattle Depot and the economic sectors in the communities nearby and revisiting the spatial memories of Ma Tau Kok Road Animal Quarantine Depot, Thing recomposes heterogeneous forms of “thing” after the deconstruction of one homogeneous category, “bovine”.

Thing is presented and commissioned by Videotage.

About Joseph Chen King-yuen 

Joseph Chen King Yuen is an intermedia artist and curator based in Hong Kong. He is the co-founder of Aurora Trip Sitter, a media arts collective working toward developing an extreme heterotopia. Chen’s works have shown across the globe, including HOME (Manchester), PHOTOFAIRS (Shanghai), Phoenix (Leicester), Tai Kwun (Hong Kong), ARTnSHELTER (Tokyo). His video work, Invisible Rock was awarded a Special Mention in the Open Category of the 19th ifva Awards. Chen’s practice deals with concerns of the analog/digital information through audial/visual technology, with an emphasis on the absurdity and ambiguity of myth/religion and pop/subculture.

許慎《說文解字》：「物，萬物也。牛為大物；天地之數，起於牽牛，故從牛，勿聲。」

《物》研究牛與人類文化的關係，回溯牛在神話宗教的神聖角色，探討牛在世俗社會的各種用途，重繫牛棚與附近社區的經濟產業，重構馬頭角牲畜檢疫站的空間經驗，展現牛作為單一類別被解構後重塑成的混雜形態。

《物》由錄映太奇呈獻及委約。

關於陳敬元

陳敬元是一位香港的跨媒體藝術家。他共同創立媒體藝術團體－極光導賞團，奮力建立一個極端的異托邦。他的作品曾在全球各地展出，包括HOME（曼徹斯特）、PHOTOFAIRS（上海）、大館（香港）、ARTnSHELTER（東京）等等。他的錄像作品《Invisible Rock》曾獲第19屆ifva獨立短片及影像媒體比賽公開組特別表揚。他的創作通過視／聽科技關注類比／數碼訊息，著重神話／宗教與流行／次文化的荒謬與曖昧。
