Man and Woman男人和女人
An improvised piece played by Thomas Chan and Margaret Lee within the confines of one room. Using a hybrid of middle class Cantonese and English, the conversation appears mundane and unfocused. However, the use of English to talk about love and Cantonese to talk about food and things not relating to love are common in Hong Kong. Young people in Hong Kong find it difficult to say the word “love” in Chinese and prefer to say “love” in English. The difficulty in expressing deep feelings in the Chinese culture is gradually overcome by developing a more open and assertive expression using a hybrid language. This work has been screened in the Island Film and Video Festival, UK and the 51st Sydney Film Festival, Australia.
