Screening
29/03/2025

Repeating, replaying and fast-forwarding the videos, I start to feel a sense of familiarity towards you on the screen. In this moment, are we connected, or are we strangers? It doesn’t matter who I am–it is something you will never know. Enlarging your face, lowering your voice, I pause and interrupt you, and then connect you to other landscapes, continuing to write a reality that has never existed. The details fade when the camera rolls, stripped away during editing, leaving only fragments and hints of who you are. Beep. Another you sends a short video, urging me to look at the scenery you have seen. At midday, the wind blows through the picturesque surroundings, and the beads of sweat trickling down your face leave me wondering what you have experienced. The you on the screen, you, and that other you—each exists in reality yet is also woven from fiction.

“The Pixelated You” comprises the works of five Hong Kong-based artists who explore and imagine others through imagery. These works include self-recorded footage, segments created by others, fictional plots and scripts, and the reconstruction of secondary materials. Working with video footage, images and sound, the artists use different editing techniques to trace the individuals who intrigue them. Watching the works, the audience draws on their own experiences in understanding these pixelated individuals. In the process of reading others, multiple versions of the “self” emerge–those being captured, those narrated, and those in front of the screen.
