VMAC Forum: Early Experimental Film and Alternative Cultural Practices in Hong Kong in the 1960s and 1970sVMAC論壇：香港早期實驗影像及六七十年代的另類文化實踐
The origins of early experimental filmmaking in Hong Kong can be traced back to the 1960s, emerging from youthful cinephile communities and publications like the film section of Chinese Student Weekly, the College Cine Club, and the Studio One. Filmmakers like Ho Fan, Xi Xi, Law Kar, and John Woo created works using the newly introduced 16mm cameras, which were then screened at “Amateur Film Festivals” – the creators and critics alike referring to these as “amateur films.” It was not until the early 1970s that the term “experimental film” was more widely adopted and legitimated, such as the “Experimental Film Festival” organized by the Film Guard from 1974 onwards. The Phoenix Cine Club’s “Hong Kong Independent Short Film Exhibition” and “The 70’s Biweekly” also promoted experimental filmmaking practices. These publications, film clubs, and experimental film works have been largely overlooked, yet they reflect important trajectories in Hong Kong’s visual art and alternative culture. They also manifest how each creator responded through the material and technical specificities of the medium to the tumultuous transitions and the historical context of the Cold War cultural climate in 1960s and 70s Hong Kong.

香港早期實驗影像可追溯自六十年代由年輕的迷影文化及社群中萌芽—好像《中國學生周報》電影版、大影會及第一映室等。何藩、西西、羅卡及吳宇森等人以其時甫引進的十六米厘攝影機創作的作品，並於「業餘電影節」中放映——創作者與評論人皆以「業餘電影」來形容這些創作。直至七十年代初「實驗電影」的名稱才逐漸被確認，如1974年起由衛影會舉辦的「實驗電影展」等。而火鳥電影會的「香港獨立短片展」與《70年代雙周刊》也推動了實驗影像的實踐。這些刊物、電影會及實驗影像作品皆鮮有被考掘，卻折射了香港重要的影像藝術與另類文化軌跡，並記述了每位創作者如何以影像獨有的物質性及技術來回應在六七十年代的紛亂之交，以及文化冷戰歷史籠罩下的香港。
